At Mozfest and as part of a group, I conducted a workshop titled "Model Making and Physical Apps." We aimed to introduce the idea of physical Apps to an audience who purely work in code and on-screen.
The workshop began with a tour around The Physical App Store including an explanation of our design process and a brief insight into how we physicalised the chosen media brands.
We then asked the group if they were involed in the development of any apps. We got three answers and these became the subject of our mini-brief; to make them physical.
One hour later, we all had plenty of insights and ideas we had had so we quickly protoyped our best ideas in card: a coin collecting robot with an internet presence, a low cost mixer with sound editing abilities and 'Lost a Friend' – a friend making and locating wristband. As the group was mainly coders, all the ideas were deemed easily achievable.
When we concluded the general mood in the room was excitement. Business cards and details were exchanged. One participant even approached me and said "I really, really love the 'Lost a Friend' idea, I just need to find out how to make money out of it!"
